20th-Nov-2005 11:32 pm - Hot Bloggable!
November 20, 2005

Hot Bloggables, its been ages sinced I've typed in "esta blog."  And it will be the first time I've used that term, did I make it up or did I hear it elsewhere?  I really don't know.  Only let it be said that "hot bloggables" came into existance on November 20th on this blog as an exclamation of surprise, similar to "I've got it Watson, its the double Helix!"  Yes, its that type of discovery/surprise/exclamation, similar in tone and style.

Anyhow, semantics aside.  I've missed having the time to write in this blog.  Its been a busy past couple of weeks, event filled, and essay packed.  Went to Epiphany/AOG Chi Alpha college campus conference early November.  Was good, saw an old family friend there too.  On Nov 7, went down to Cal for Prospective Student Night for the Graduate School of Education at Tolman.  Got a good feel of the student body, the campus and facilities, and got to better know some of the faculty--though would like to get to know them better.  Then on Nov 11, went to SF for Night Strike.  On Nov 12-13 went back to the Bay Area for Gong's birthday.  Was good.  Man, three times in the Bay Area in one week, a little too much traveling for me.  Then on Saturday went to Sac for SB Saturdays, and then Before the Throne with UIC/Unity in Christ worship and missions night with 14 fellowships on campus.  It was good.

Been working on Berkeley's app, writing the essay, getting those letters of rec, deadlines coming up soon, so want to stay on top of things.

Would like to blog about church and things at DCF, but will try to piece together things I've been thinking the past couple weeks.

Anyhow, theres for a hotbloggable entry, right off the bloggertown press, straight for the technorati or weblogs.us or whatever rssfeedmachine crawler comes my way.  Lol, time to get out of the technews, and perhaps back into painting, or better yet, back to the essays for the apps, and getting a good nights rest.

Jay El

October Update

Hey All,

Skipping the formalities of naming and dating this entry, I'll just skip right down to a summary of this month.  And it sure has passed by quickly, but its been a good month.

The three classes I am taking and PE Lacrosse are going well.  Lots of time spent in PLB 105.  Did well on both the PLB and the Bis 104 midterm--pleased with that.  WFC is interesting/intriguing.  Glad I am taking it, but the clock seems to take a long time to travel the 50 minutes in that class.  Lacrosse is just plain fun.  Am really enjoying it, and I've got good speed for the class, now just need to work on picking up those ground balls, cradling, defense and working with the left hand.  Its a great game.

October was also a good month for UCD ICC career fair events.  There was the ICC Career Fair for Fall, the Community Service Fair, and the Graduate School Fair all within the proximity of one or two weeks of one another.  Got some good ideas and info at the Career Fair.  Found out some interesting stuff at the Community Service Fair--I may want to fit some of it in Spring Quarter (that is if I can compress more of my schedule into Winter Quarter, but more on that later).  And the Graduate Fair went well.  I got to talk to people from USC, UCLA, and Berkeley .  I had a good conversation with the man from Berkeley, talked about schools in Oakland and academic outreach there.  I'll definitely go to the Prospective Student Night come Nov 7.

For the past month I've been doing the prep for graduate school.  Finished CBEST and CSET at the beginning and end of summer.  Took the GRE on October 15 in Alameda. Did decent.  The math score was really decent. Lol.  The scores were above average for all the schools I looked at, so for the most part, I think I've got a good shot at all the schools.  So now on to letters of recommendation and applications.  Have accessed all the graduate school apps online, printed out letters of rec, and now I need to start rolling on the essays and applications.  Hope all goes well, meanwhile maneuvering this between the classes midterms and other activities.

In terms of clubs and other activities, things are going well.  I am really enjoying DCF.  Small groups are on campus this year, and I am enjoying going back to that old Tercero.  Good times good times.  Having a good time with coregroup.  Lot of good guys and Will is a great coregroup leader.  Also am learning some computer stuff on the side with Jason.  NSCS is going alright.  Had the induction the other day.  Started tutoring at Holmes, got the academic outreach programs started there again.  Helping to facilitate that and communications.  Helping out with the website for both clubs, at http://dcfdavis.org/ and http://asucd.ucdavis.edu/organizations/other/nscs/.  At the community service fair, I talked to a few directors and assistants with Picnic Day this year.  For two out of the last three years, I've volunteered on Picnic Day, the Parade Route and the Sheep Dog trials--and both times getting a cool Picnic Day UC Davis tee shirt!  However, this year, I'd like to get a little more involved, having a little more fun too.  They mentioned they might need help on the technical side, and I mentioned that I help with website stuff for two clubs.  They told me to contact the Picnic Day chair/director.   Emailed them off a while ago, and we'll see where this goes.  It'll be fun either way.

Have pass times coming up soon.  Monday at 6:00 pm to be exact.  Need to sign up for a PLB class, an EVE class, and another PLB class for breadth, even though I am emphasizing in PLB--figures.  Also other classes I need before I graduate are an Arts/Hum GE and another Education class for the minor.  It may be possible to fit it all into one quarter, and then I could free up a spring quarter for events/activities listed at this months ICC fairs.  But we'll see.

On the side, of course am doing the webwork.  But trying to learn more about computers too.  Perhaps too much time spent with it, but around midterms and afterwards, its fun to fiddle with, especially since I've got an extra harddrive.  Tried out the debian/ubuntu deriv.  Not bad.  Only thing is bootups are kinda bothering me.  But its a nice easy distro to set up, and I can get a Linux Apache PHP stack set up real fast.  Just would need to learn how to host stuff thats all.  The boot thing is kinda bothering me, and I'm trying to transfer over files and stuff.  Last night, just decided if I'm to experiment with going all into linux, documents emails and all, I might as well learn the installing from source and the backend as well.  Will try slackware.  Heard its real good for speed and learning from as well. Also seems to have quite a bit of documentation and is stable.  Good distro to jump off later for other linux/unix derivs.  So we'll see.

Would really like the opportunity to travel and explore or do some type of internship like that.  Joanna is having a great time in HK.  Man, she's the life of the floor, meeting students from all over Asia and some of the UC's.  Taking a few sociology type classes, and excelling in them well.  She's traveling all over the place with friends.  Guangdong province, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand.  Man, its kinda like in HS and college for club volleyball, travelin' Na.  Yep, travelin' Na.

Church is goin well.  Am enjoying it, as well as with DCF and coregroups.  Things reflected upon themes and things to pray about: peace, joy, discernment direction, discipline, God is near, pray for God to do something afresh, a la Jesus turning water into wine at a Jewish wedding.  Gods an awesome God, full of life and full of surprises.  Need to walk in it.  Ask for a fresh portion each day.

Also, finally bought some white acrylic gesso for a painting I've been wanting to do for the past year.  Just wante the Gesso for priming the canvas.  We'll see if I scrounge up enough time to paint it, between the classes applications and the web/computer fiddling on the side.  The last one is optional, may have to be an either or--computer fiddling or painting.  Often times, I get more satisfaction out of the painting, accomplishing a canvas.  But its just kinda fun to mess with the code, but then you've got either a messed up harddrive or server.  Oh well.  Anyhow, Going to need a lot of space and newspaper, the canvas is about 5 feet by 3 feet, so it'll need to be either indoors with a lot of newspaper, or outdoors with a few newspapers.  We'll see.  Once I get it done I'll post a picture to the gallery and to the blog.  Thats about it, so have a great day.

Laters,

~jayel

School Starts

Oct. 1st, 2005 | 10:53 pm

October 1, 2005

Dear All,

Its been a busy week, past couple of days. Am kinda tired. Thursday and Friday classes went well. Early in the morning for both. Plant anatomy comes TR class in the morning and lab in the afternoon, 6 hours of lab this quarter. Fun stuff, only done one time before and that was for Chem 2ch freshman year. Sweet memories. Bis 104 is at 8am, and WFC 151 wildlife fish and conservation follows shortly after--looks like a real interesting class.

O-week (orientation week? opening week? too many acronym shortcuts) went well. I really enjoyed the dcf events put on this quarter. Uber sweet night, the Katrina lucnh feed for donations, christian music night, and the Friday night meeting. It all went by really well. And now my back is sore from the BBQ/Sports Day. Haven't played that much volleyball in a long time.

On a side note, projects that are occupying my time. Have really spruced up (what a wonderful verb derived from a tree) the dcfdavis.org website. Had to configure a couple template files and the php backend. Changed the graphics/images and the style/theme. Added info here and there and updated the gallery interface. To be honest with you, I've just made modifications here and there to the template that Dan set up a couple years ago. It has served well. But learning all this php and learning some operators and commands, its quite something. It seems like sometimes that theres some convoluted code in the background. We'll see if it can get fixed up. Also, in the long term I want to learn rss.php scripts and database backend retrievals, in case theirs a site rehaul or I want implement a mysql database on a website of my own. My my my, its a far cry from the html tags I learned for a geocities website I created for the library internet docent job. My, my, my.

Am working on the dcfdavis.org website, the nscs ucdavis site, and of course the agsedu splink website. Have found a couple good css/website resources:opensourcewebdesign or oswd.org and csszengarden are excellent sites. Also, been trying to find some time to work on a script/painting that I started scatching out, pencil on canvas. It seems that side interests go in phases, at one point it was cooking (omelets and soups), then it was painting (acrylics galore end of sophomore year start of junior), then it was linux operating system meltdown time (still occasionally, but more with live linux cds/aka knoppix derivatives), and now web based software stuff (ala php and mysql sites and software). I feel I've learned a lot of computer skills this year, since gaining some webspace and being webadmin for a couple sites. The learning curve has grown. But I'd like to take a computer course informally in the future, probably something on scripting languages, how to utilized databases (e.g. mysql or MS Access), and maybe a round of hardware--I'd like to build my own computer in the future, either that or buy a laptop.

Anyhow, those are some thoughts for the week. Have a few reflections on O-Week and dcf and church this week too, but I'll save that for another journal.

P.s. May want to learn the dvorak keyboard, may be kinda fun, and allow me to type faster, either that or to reduce wrist strain when typing/analyzing code or papers.
